This direct bolt-in CII-style pump, designed by Lee Power Steering, utilizes Saginaw-style internals. This provides a high-performance pump that is much quieter and performs better than those noisy stock Ford pumps.

Why does this part cost more than a remanufactured Ford replacement pump? This new hand-assembled steering pump with all new components is tested at our shop in Valencia, California.

Different Variations of the Ford CII Pump

Ford CII Pump Variations

Reservoir Style

There are three different reservoir can styles:

  1. Single return line barb – for vehicles without hydro boost brakes
  2. Dual return line barbs – for vehicles with hydro boost brakes
  3. No fill cap or neck – for vehicles that use a remote power steering fluid reservoir

Hose Type

Over the years, these pumps came with two different hose thread options:

  • 5/8-18 SAE Inverted Flare
  • 16x1.5MM Metric

Pressure and Flow

Ford also had many different pressure and flow settings depending on the vehicle.

We have simplified this by offering these settings:

  1. Single Return Reservoir for Gearbox: 1450PSI / 2.75GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-GB (METRIC)
  2. Single Return Reservoir for Rack and Pinion: 1250PSI / 2.25GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-R (METRIC)
  3. Dual Return Reservoir for Gearbox with Hydro Boost: 1750PSI / 3.25GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-HB (METRIC)
  4. No Neck (Remote Reservoir) for Rack and Pinion: 1250PSI / 2.5GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-REMOTE-R (METRIC)
  5. Single Return Reservoir for Rack and Gearbox: 1450PSI / 2.75GPM / 5/8-18 SAE Inverted Flare Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-GB (SAE)

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does this CII power steering pump fit?

This pump is designed as a direct bolt-in replacement for many Ford CII power steering pump applications found on Ford vehicles from approximately 1978–2003. Always verify your specific year, make, model, hose fitting type, and steering system before ordering.

What makes this pump different from a remanufactured Ford replacement pump?

Unlike many remanufactured pumps, this is a brand-new, hand-assembled pump built with all-new components and tested at our California facility. It uses Lee Power Steering's Saginaw-style internals, which are designed to operate more quietly and efficiently than the original Ford CII internals.

Why are Ford CII pumps known for being noisy?

Original Ford CII pumps have a reputation for whining and premature wear due to their rotor and vane design. Lee Power Steering's upgraded Saginaw-style internals improve fluid flow and reduce noise, especially at lower engine RPMs.

Is this pump intended for rack-and-pinion or steering gearbox applications?

This specific pump (PUMP-CII-R Metric) is configured for rack-and-pinion steering systems with a pressure setting of 1250 PSI and 2.25 GPM flow. Vehicles with steering gearboxes typically require different pressure and flow settings.

What are the pressure and flow specifications?

This pump is calibrated to:

  • Pressure: 1250 PSI
  • Flow Rate: 2.25 GPM
  • Hose Fitting: 16mm x 1.5mm Metric

These settings are optimized for many rack-and-pinion applications.

What hose fitting does this pump use?

This version uses a 16mm x 1.5mm metric pressure hose fitting. Ford CII pumps were produced with both metric and SAE fittings, so verify your hose type before ordering.

Does this pump work with hydroboost brakes?

No. This pump features a single-return reservoir and is intended for vehicles without hydroboost brakes. Vehicles equipped with hydroboost typically require a dual-return reservoir configuration.

Can this pump be used with larger tires?

Possibly, but larger tires often require higher pressure and flow settings depending on the steering system and vehicle weight. Contact us if you're running oversized tires and need help selecting the proper pump configuration.

Can air in my steering system cause pump noise?

Yes. Air entering the power steering system can cause whining, foaming fluid, and erratic steering performance. Proper bleeding and checking for leaks are critical for quiet operation.

Is this pump tested before shipping?

Yes. Every pump is hand-assembled and tested at our California facility before shipment to ensure proper operation and performance.

Can this pump be custom-configured?

Yes. Lee Power Steering can configure CII pumps with different pressure settings, flow rates, reservoir styles, and fitting types to match your application.

What fluid should I use?

Lee Power Steering Fluid is strongly recommended for maximum pump life and reduced foaming.

Acceptable alternatives include:

  • AC Delco non-synthetic power steering fluid
  • Valvoline non-synthetic power steering fluid

Do NOT use:

  • ATF
  • Synthetic power steering fluid

Do I need a new reservoir?

No. This pump includes a single-return reservoir and fill neck. However, if your application uses a remote reservoir, you'll need the "No Neck" remote-reservoir version instead.

What are the signs that my current power steering pump needs replacement?

Common symptoms include:

  • Excessive pump whining or groaning
  • Hard steering
  • Inconsistent steering assist
  • Fluid leaks
  • Metal contamination in the fluid
  • Steering assist loss at idle

Is installation difficult?

This pump is designed as a direct bolt-in replacement for applicable Ford CII pump applications. However, proper installation, hose compatibility verification, and system bleeding are essential for the best results.
