Power Steering Pumps

The power steering pump is an essential component in any vehicle’s hydraulic power steering system. It provides the necessary hydraulic pressure to assist with steering. A quality steering pump significantly enhances driving precision, reduces steering effort, and contributes to overall vehicle safety.

Understanding the nuances of selecting the right replacement power steering pump is crucial, especially when any vehicle modification (such as larger tires) is made. We offer OEM replacement pumps and complete pump kits that adapt a superior, higher-flow pump to fit your vehicle. Along with selling new power steering pumps, we also have a pump rebuilding service for certain types of OEM pumps. Call to see if yours is on our list of rebuildable pumps.

Frequently Asked Questions About Power Steering Pumps

What does a power steering pump do?

The power steering pump pressurizes hydraulic fluid. It delivers fluid to the steering gear and reduces the physical effort needed to turn the wheel.

How do I know if my power steering pump needs to be replaced?

The most common signs include whining or groaning noises when you turn the wheel, needing more effort when steering, fluid leaks near the pump, or inconsistent steering responsiveness.

How do I choose the correct power steering pump for my vehicle?

You should consult your vehicle’s manual for specifications and consider factors like pressure ratings, pulley compatibility, reservoir style, and fitment types.

Do gearbox pumps need different pressure and flow settings than a pump for rack and pinion?

Yes. Pumps for a gearbox are typically set at higher settings than a rack and pinion.

Does tire size have any effect on the steering pump settings?

Yes. Larger tires can dictate higher pressure and flow settings.

Can air in the steering system make a pump noisy?

Yes. Air in the system will make a steering pump noisy. Air can be introduced from improper bleeding, or a leak anywhere in the system. We have even seen instances where a hose will “suck air” without having a noticeable leak. This is typically in a low-pressure line. Gearboxes that are worn out or hydro boosts can also have internal leaks that can introduce air into the system.

Can the reservoir style make my pump noisy?

Yes. Reservoir design can make for a noisy pump. Improper baffling, lack of baffles, and improper return line placement can all lead to a noisy pump. Every day we get calls from customers using aftermarket reservoirs that make their system noisy. The Lee Power Steering reservoirs have a proprietary internal design that uses a series of baffles and a fluid-slowing device that keeps the fluid perfectly still. This also results in a much cooler system.
