Product Details

The 1999-2003 Ford F-250/F-350 with the 7.3 motor is a great workhorse. Unfortunately, the power steering system can only handle street and light off-road usage. When you use it as a tow vehicle and need to do extended periods of low-speed steering (backing a trailer) or modify it to larger tires, the OEM pump falls short and will often fail.

Our Power Steering Pump Upgrade Kit replaces the stock Ford steering pump with our High-Performance Saginaw N-pump that has been modified with a ported housing, chromoly shaft, needle, and thrust bearings. This is the same pump that many of our off-road race teams are using to win the Baja 1000!

This kit also includes:

  • CNC'd pump adaptor bracket that will bolt to the OEM bracket
  • proprietary design 3.5” x 10” reservoir
  • pressure hose
  • return hose
  • all necessary mounting hardware

Our reservoir uses a unique design to keep steering fluid perfectly still. This results in zero cavitation and reduces air in the system – which keeps operating temperatures lower, resulting in longer pump life. Our pressurized reservoir also keeps oil in and dirt out.

If your vehicle has tires that are 37" or larger, we recommend using hydraulic ram assist. When adding a ram your pump will need higher flow. We offer this pump with a larger liner and billet end cap to handle the extra flow requirements for the ram. +$150

View Installation Instructions

When using this pump kit, you MUST use the radiator hose that routes "through the serpentine belt". This is the more common hose, but some vehicles came equipped with the "around the belt" hose. If you need to change the hose, the Gates part # is: GAP22542.

Hydro Boost Concerns

We have come across a fair number of hydro boost issues in Ford vehicles. Once adding a higher flow pump (especially our pump set for ram assist) we often see back pressure issues that are hydro boost related.

Unfortunately nowadays it is hard to find a new quality hydro-boost unit. Most of what is available is remanufactured and oftentimes very low quality. Lee's has begun stocking brand new Bosch hydro boost units that we disassemble, apply our high flow porting, then re-assemble and test.

Fluid Recommendation

It is HIGHLY recommended to use our specialty formulated Lee Power Steering Fluid.

AC Delco or Valvoline non-synthetic power steering fluid will work as a second choice but do not have the same Wear and Anti-Foaming additives our fluid has.

DO NOT USE ATF OR ANY TYPE OF SYNTHETIC FLUID.

    7.3L kit

So far I only have a couple hours on the system. I have heard lots of direct positive feedback directly from guys on Facebook groups about this kit. While it is a good kit, I’m most impressed with the knowledge and customer service with Lee power steering. Makes my power steering troubles a thing of the past, and I can finally rest my concerns with their assistance.

2002 replacement of original pump after 240,000 miles.

The install went well. A couple things could be improved. I wasn’t familiar with the 90degree fittings and how difficult it was to slip hose onto them. A little WD40 makes it much easier. I didn’t want to use the 21 year old factory return hose and there wasn’t enough hose supplied with install kit. Also 90 degrees fitting there would clean things up nicely. The Saginaw up grade resulted in better steering with No pulsation.

    Easy to install

Instructions were clear. I brought my bracket to a machine shop and had them mill it instead of cutting per instructions. Cut the tube that goes to the cooler for better alignment. Recommend flushing the system when done with install. Great job on designing this pump upgrade!

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does this power steering pump upgrade kit fit?

This kit is designed for 1999–2003 Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks equipped with the 7.3L engine.

Why upgrade from the factory Ford power steering pump?

The factory pump works well for standard street and light-duty use, but it can struggle during low-speed steering, trailer backing, towing, and when larger tires are installed. This kit replaces the stock Ford pump with our high-performance modified Saginaw N-pump for improved steering performance and durability.

What is included in the kit?

The kit includes our modified high-performance Saginaw N-pump, CNC’d pump adapter bracket, proprietary 3.5” x 10” reservoir, filter, pressure hose, return hose, and the necessary mounting hardware and fittings.

What makes the Lee Saginaw pump different from a stock replacement pump?

Our Saginaw N-pump is modified with a ported housing, chromoly shaft and needle bearing. It is built for higher performance and durability than the stock Ford pump.

Will this help with poor steering at low speeds?

Yes. This kit is designed to improve steering performance in situations where the OEM pump often struggles, such as low-speed maneuvering, backing trailers, towing, and running larger tires.

Do I need hydraulic ram assist with this kit?

If your truck has 37” tires or larger, we recommend using hydraulic ram assist. When adding ram assist, the pump will need higher flow, and we offer this pump with a larger liner and billet end cap for the additional flow requirements.

Is there an upgraded version for ram assist?

Yes. For trucks running hydraulic ram assist, we offer a higher-flow version with a larger liner and billet end cap to handle the added demand.

What power steering fluid should I use?

We highly recommend using Lee Power Steering Fluid. As a second choice, AC Delco or Valvoline non-synthetic power steering fluid may be used, but they do not have the same wear and anti-foaming additives as our fluid.

Can I use ATF or synthetic fluid?

No. Do not use ATF or any type of synthetic fluid with this kit.

Are there any radiator hose requirements?

Yes. This pump kit requires the radiator hose that routes through the serpentine belt. This is the more common hose, but some trucks came with the “around the belt” hose. If you need to change the hose, the Gates part number is GAP22542.

Can this kit affect my hydroboost system?

In some Ford applications, adding a higher-flow pump can reveal or create hydroboost-related back pressure issues, especially with pumps set up for ram assist. We offer high-flow Bosch hydroboost units that are disassembled, ported, reassembled, and tested for these applications.

Is installation hardware included?

Yes. The kit includes the necessary mounting hardware, along with the adapter bracket, reservoir, pressure hose, and return hose.

Are installation instructions available?

Yes. Installation instructions are available from the product page.

What is the warranty?

This kit includes a 12-month limited warranty against manufacturer defects.

What is the return policy?

Items may be returned within 30 days of purchase. The original order receipt should be included in the return box, and items should be returned in the original packaging. Once the return is received and inspected for damage, a refund may be issued.

What is the lead time for this kit?

Lead times vary. For the most accurate ETA, contact Lee Power Steering by email or call (661) 568-9170.
