Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Lee 2-Inch Power Assist Ram Cylinder used for?
This hydraulic ram cylinder adds steering assistance by working with a properly equipped power steering system. It is particularly useful for vehicles with large tires or applications where additional steering force is needed.
What makes the Lee Power Steering ram cylinder different?
Lee ram cylinders are manufactured in-house using DOM tubing, threaded aluminum end caps, an aluminum piston, and a 55,000-psi chrome rod. They are held to precise tolerances to minimize internal bypass and feature built-in soft stops that help protect the steering system.
How do the built-in soft stops work?
During the final 1/4 inch of travel at either end of the cylinder, the piston gradually closes the port orifice and slows the ram. This reduces the impact of the steering system reaching its end stops and helps minimize wear on steering components.
What cylinder lengths are available?
The 2-inch ram cylinder is available in the following lengths:
- 4 inches
- 4.5 inches
- 5 inches
- 5.5 inches
- 6 inches
- 6.5 inches
- 7 inches
- 7.5 inches
- 8 inches
The piston may also be modified to accommodate a 1/4-inch length increment when required. Contact Lee Power Steering for assistance with a custom length.
Why is selecting the correct ram length important?
The ram must match the actual steering travel of the vehicle. A cylinder that is too long can place damaging force on the steering system after the mechanical steering stops have been reached. A cylinder that is too short can limit the vehicle’s turning radius.
How do I determine the correct ram length?
Measure the tie rod’s total travel from full steering lock in one direction to full lock in the other direction. Because correct sizing is critical, contact Lee Power Steering if you are uncertain about the measurement or which length to order.
What shaft diameters are available?
The 2-inch cylinder is offered with either a 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch shaft. The appropriate rod ends must match the selected shaft diameter.
What size piston is used in the 2-inch ram?
The 2-inch ram uses a 1-3/4-inch piston.
Are rod ends included with the cylinder?
No. Rod ends are sold separately. Select rod ends that match the cylinder’s shaft diameter—either 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch.
Does this product include hoses, mounting hardware, or a tie-rod clamp?
No. This product listing is for the ram cylinder. Rod ends and the other components needed for installation are sold separately. Customers who need a more complete installation package should consider a Lee Power Steering customizable ram kit.
Does my steering gearbox need to be modified for ram assist?
The steering gearbox must have hydraulic ports capable of supplying the ram cylinder. Depending on the application, the power steering pump may also require a higher flow setting. Contact Lee Power Steering to confirm the requirements for your system.
Can I install the ram cylinder myself?
Installation requires accurate measurement, correct cylinder alignment, hydraulic plumbing, and suitable mounting points. Fabrication or welding may also be necessary. The ram should be mounted as parallel to the tie rod as practical, and the installation must be checked for interference throughout the suspension and steering travel. Professional installation is recommended if you are unfamiliar with hydraulic-assist steering systems.
What should I check after installation?
Before operating the vehicle, confirm that the cylinder does not bottom out before the vehicle reaches its mechanical steering stops. Also check hose routing, mounting security, fluid level, system bleeding, and clearance throughout the full range of steering and suspension movement.
What maintenance does the ram cylinder require?
Periodically inspect the cylinder, shaft, rod ends, hoses, fittings, and mounting points. Check for fluid leaks, damaged components, loose hardware, or unusual steering operation. Maintain the correct power steering fluid level and address any problems before operating the vehicle.
What warranty is included?
The ram cylinder is covered by Lee Power Steering’s 12-month limited warranty against manufacturer defects. Please review the full warranty terms for coverage details and exclusions.
What is the return policy?
Eligible items may be returned within 30 days of purchase. Include the original order receipt and return the item in its original packaging. Returned products are inspected for damage before a refund is issued. Review the current return policy before sending an item back.
