Product Details

Pressure and return line seats for Saginaw gearboxes after 1980 that have metric fitting threads.

This is our best-selling gearbox seat. It is for customers that are installing a newer style Saginaw gearbox that has 16 and 18mm metric threads and uses o-ring style hoses (1980 and on), into a pre-1980 vehicle that has SAE inverted flare fittings.

All of our seat kits come with instructions and an installation tool.

Customers purchasing this seat kit often purchase the small spline (3/4-30) rag joint that may be needed when installing a newer-style gearbox.

Saginaw Gearbox Seat Kit FAQ

What does this Saginaw gearbox seat kit do?

This kit allows SAE inverted-flare power steering hoses from many pre-1980 vehicles to connect to a newer Saginaw steering gearbox designed for metric O-ring hoses.

Which steering gearboxes is this kit designed for?

It is designed for newer-style Saginaw power steering gearboxes with 16mm and 18mm metric-threaded pressure and return ports. These gearboxes were commonly used beginning around 1980.

How do I know if I need this seat kit?

You will typically need this kit when installing a post-1980 Saginaw gearbox in a pre-1980 vehicle while retaining the vehicle’s original SAE inverted-flare power steering hoses.

What hose type can I use after installing the seats?

The installed seats allow compatible SAE inverted-flare pressure and return hoses to seal against the newer metric-port Saginaw gearbox.

What is included with the kit?

The kit includes:

  • Pressure-port seat
  • Return-port seat
  • Installation tool
  • Installation instructions

How can I identify the pressure-port seat?

The pressure-port seat is marked in red. It should be installed in the gearbox’s pressure port. The other seat is installed in the return port.

Do I need to remove the check valve from the pressure port?

No. The current Lee Power Steering seat design can be installed without removing the pressure-port check valve.

Is the seat kit difficult to install?

Installation is relatively straightforward. Position the correct seat in its port, use the supplied installation tool, and lightly tap the seat until it bottoms out. Always follow the included instructions and make sure the ports are clean before installation.

Does this kit include power steering hoses?

No. The kit includes only the pressure and return seats, installation tool, and instructions. Hoses are sold separately.

Will I also need a different rag joint?

Possibly. Many newer Saginaw gearboxes use a small 3/4-30 spline input shaft. Confirm the input-shaft size and your existing steering-column connection before installation. A compatible small-spline rag joint is available separately.

Can this kit be used with every Saginaw gearbox?

No. This kit is specifically intended for Saginaw gearboxes with 16mm and 18mm metric O-ring-style ports. Gearboxes manufactured before 1980 or those with different port configurations may require another seat kit.

Will these seats help prevent power steering leaks?

When correctly matched and installed, the seats provide the proper sealing surface for compatible inverted-flare hoses. However, leaks may also be caused by damaged hose ends, incorrect fittings, contaminated ports, loose connections, or worn components.

Is professional installation required?

Professional installation is not normally required for an experienced mechanic or installer. If you are uncertain about port identification, hose compatibility, or proper installation, consult a qualified steering professional before operating the vehicle.

What warranty is included?

The seat kit is covered by Lee Power Steering’s 12-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
