A Quiet Ford CII Replacement Pump

The Ford "CII" style pump can be found in over 600 Ford vehicles from 1978-2003. Although Ford lists over 100 different part numbers for this pump, every application can be covered with just a few variations.

This pump is found in various models, from the Ford Escort to the Ford F350 Super Duty. But no matter which vehicle they came in, they have a reputation for being a very loud (whiney) pump that does not last very long. The reason for this is Ford’s inferior rotor and vane design.

When compared with a Saginaw-style rotor, the spring-loaded vanes cause more noise and wear and do not flow the same amount of fluid (especially at lower RPM). The photos below illustrate the difference.

The Ford-style rotor uses spring-loaded vanes. Because the vanes are shallow and cannot travel far, the cam profile on the ring is almost round. Compare that to the oval profile on the Saginaw-style rotor Lee Power Steering uses in our CII-style pumps. This allows each vane to flow much more oil per revolution. Our rotor also has 12 vanes while the Ford rotor has 10.

Lee Power Steering has designed a direct bolt-in CII-style pump with Saginaw-style internals. This results in a much quieter pump that also performs better. Yes, it does cost more than a remanufactured Ford replacement pump, but this is a brand new pump that is hand-assembled and tested at our shop in Valencia, California with all new components. Your steering has never been as quiet as it will be with our pump!

Different Variations of the Ford CII Pump

Ford CII Pump Variations

Reservoir Style

There are 3 different reservoir can styles:

  1. Single return line barb – for vehicles without hydro boost brakes
  2. Dual return line barbs – for vehicles with hydro boost brakes
  3. No fill cap or neck – for vehicles that use a remote power steering fluid reservoir

Hose Type

Over the years, these pumps came with two different hose thread options:

  • 5/8-18 SAE Inverted Flare
  • 16x1.5MM Metric

Pressure and Flow

Ford also had many different pressure and flow settings depending on the vehicle.

We have simplified this by offering these settings:

  1. Single Return Reservoir for Gearbox: 1450PSI / 2.75GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-GB (METRIC)
  2. Single Return Reservoir for Rack and Pinion: 1250PSI / 2.25GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-R (METRIC)
  3. Dual Return Reservoir for Gearbox with Hydro Boost: 1750PSI / 3.25GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-HB (METRIC)
  4. No Neck (Remote Reservoir) for Rack and Pinion: 1250PSI / 2.5GPM / 16x1.5MM Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-REMOTE-R (METRIC)
  5. Single Return Reservoir for Rack and Gearbox: 1450PSI / 2.75GPM / 5/8-18 SAE Inverted Flare Hose - Lee Part #PUMP-CII-GB (SAE)

*** We also offer a custom pump builder where you can choose any reservoir with any pressure, flow, and fitting style.***
